The Lord's Hand (The Green Sheet)

Issue 69 The Green Sheet February 2023

Financial Report:

Offering Update of Budget through January 22nd, 2023

Budgeted: $8,568.00

Offerings Received: $9350.31

Over Budget: $782.31

Over budget $195.57 per Sunday

Thank you to all our faithful givers.

Spaghetti Dinner: Our annual spaghetti dinner will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 11th. Tickets are $12 per adult. Children under 12 will eat for free. The meal will include spaghetti with your choice of homemade meatballs, meat sauce, or vegetarian sauce; Texas Roadhouse dinner rolls and salad; and homemade desserts. Takeout and delivery will be available between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. upon request. Please call (920) 458-1322 for tickets or purchase tickets on Sunday.

Flooring Project: The church currently has a balance of $14,697.57 on our flooring loan. We have $7,555.61 in the bank dedicated to this loan. This means we technically need to raise $7,141.96 before the flooring is completely paid off. Our next fundraiser is the February Spaghetti Dinner.

SOUPerbowl Sunday: All are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations until February 12th. Pastor Barkley is calling on everyone to bring in 300 items! Food collected will go to St. Mark’s Food Pantry. Let everyone give with joy to help serve and love the neighbor.

Parking Lot Project: The trustees handed a $20k down payment to W Asphalt to begin work in early spring. The money was made available by a LCEF low interest church improvement loan. The deteriorating lot needed immediate attention and is becoming a safety hazard to worshipers. Happily, this will be completed before the congregation’s 75th anniversary celebration in July.

Meals on Wheels Donation and Mission of the Month: $613.00 was raised for Meals on Wheels at our Christopher Gardens Service. It was decided to keep the giving going in October! This month's mission of the month will also be Meals on Wheels. Please consider giving to this mission using your special mission envelopes provided in your envelope boxes.

Sound Panels: The trustees are planning to install acoustic sound panels in the ceiling of the Fellowship Hall. These panels will not reduce sound, but they will reduce the echo. Three panels will be installed initially to make sure the design and function is corrected before purchasing more.

Trustee Work: The trustees were able to replace lights over the altar. All old outlets have been replaced and there are plans to upgrade some outlets to include USB ports.

Christopher Gardens Success: Everyone who attended our September 18th Service had a wonderful time. The Lord blessed us all with beautiful weather. We had our biggest attendance ever with over 18 visitors attending. Let's do it again next year!

Book Club at Johnston's Bakery: Pastor Barkley is leading a new Book Club once a month. We will meet from 9:30-11am at Johnston's in their meeting room. We will begin by reading The Screwtape Letters. You can buy your own book copy, check one out from the library, or ask Pastor and he can provide a copy. Please read the first 9 letters before our first Book Club meeting.

New Member Classes: Have a friend interested in Lutheranism? Do you feel like you could learn more about your own faith? Consider joining our new member class which begins in October. All materials will be provided. Please contact Pastor Barkley with any questions.

LIA Update: From their website: "At start, the students are engaging in English class to help them succeed in Theological classes that are taught mainly in English. They attend Daily Prayer services and practice leading them. The Morning Prayer includes a reading from the Book of Concord and its explanation. On Sundays they learn the liturgy in Divine Service. LST is a self sustainable school. We grow our own food. The students have chosen to cover their tuition by working in different tasks around the campus for three hours every school day rather than paying for it. May the Lord bless this semester and grant the students sharp minds willing and ready to learn the teachings of the Lutheran Church!"

Live Stream is Greenlit: Our patience has paid off. Our service will begin live streaming on Sunday, September 25th. Services will go live on our church YouTube page. Go to youtube.com and search for "Luther Memorial, Sheboygan WI".

Issue 66 The Green Sheet August 2022

Financial Report

Offering Update of Budget through July 17th 2022 – 29 Weeks:

Budgeted $56,521.00

Offering Received $57,817.16

Over Budget $1,296.16

Over budget an average of $44.69 per Sunday

Thank you to all our faithful givers!

VBS was a Success: We had over 70 children this year attend our joint VBS! Every day the children sang, completed crafts, and learned about Jesus Christ. When asked, all the children said they could NOT WAIT to come back next year. Thank you to all the helpers who brought in snacks over the week! In the summer of 2023, St. Paul's downtown will host our joint VBS!

Rummage Items: You can bring in rummage items until Sunday, August 14th. We ask that you not bring adult clothing, televisions, or anything with refrigerant. Tools, toys, and cookware often sell quickly!

Rummage Sale & Brat Fry:
After a two-year hiatus, our Rummage Sale is returning! It will be held on Saturday, August 20th from 8am-2pm. We will be selling brats and burgers during that time as well. Food will be sold for a fixed price, but all rummage items will be sold for a goodwill donation. Proceeds will help us pay down our flooring loan.

Helpers Needed: Our rummage sale will need sorters, sellers, grillers, and much more! Please stay tuned for additional details as the date gets closer. This is always an event that draws many community members into our church.

Evangelism Postcards: Pastor is currently working with Zimmerman Printing in Sheboygan to create postcards to invite our community to our September 11 Christopher Gardens service. We received a 1/2 mile radius mailing list (free) from LCEF. This added up to over 900 addresses! These will be paid for by a generous Evangelism grant from the South Wisconsin District. These postcards will also contain website and Sunday Service information. We hope the Gospel reaches our community using these postcards!

Flooring Loan Update: We currently owe the Lutheran Church Extension Fund around $15,000 on our flooring loan. The beginning loan was $25,000. Our congregation has approximately $6,000.00 in a flooring fund. We keep this amount to make monthly payments and cover any "lean" months. Current monthly payments are $250.71 at 3.87%. Beginning in June the rate decreased to 3.62% to $246.40 a month. This means we technically need less than $10,000 ($15k minus $6k) before the loan is paid off. This is great news considering we did not have many fundraising opportunities during covid. Looking at the big picture, Luther Memorial has raised around $16,000 towards paying off our floor! Great job! The LORD continues to bless us!

Live Streaming: With the help of an outside specialist, Luther Memorial's live stream project will soon be greenlit. Once we go live, our services will be streamed directly to YouTube which anyone can access. Older services will be archived. We will make sure to have links to our streaming services on our website and other promotional materials.

Operation Backpack:  Do your kids need a backpack and some school supplies, but you can’t afford it? We have Good News for you! Come to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Saturday, August 13th, 2022 from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM 1614 S 23rd St, Sheboygan WI 53081 Your kids could get a backpack with some school supplies FREE OF COST REQUIREMENTS: KIDS MUST BE PRESENT. Supplies are LIMITED; FIRST COME GET SERVED.
For further info call Rev David Blas 630-229-2455/ 920-452-8759; Scott Pfannkuch 920-917-2145.

Prayer Requests: Prayer is an important part of the worship of the Church on Sunday. If you would like the congregation to add you to our public prayers, please contact Josh, Amanda, or Pastor Barkley. You can also speak with Pastor right before the service begins on Sundays. We want to pray for you!

Parking Lot: At the July Church Assembly Meeting, the congregation voted to move forward with receiving and approving bids to pave our church parking lot. Based on the bids we have already received, it looks like the lot will not have to be dug up. Rather, two separate layers of asphalt will be laid to fill any issues and then properly seal the lot.

Light Out and Flagpole Issue: During a terrible storm this summer, we lost power to our sign on Eisner Avenue. The flagpole was also bent due to extreme wind.  The trustees are working with Marshall Sign to repair the sign and pole. The trustees have also contacted our insurance company to see what would be covered.

Preparing for September: With the summer months upon us, it's almost impossible to imagine Fall. As you consider your calendars in September, start thinking about your church life in the Fall. Midweek and Sunday Bible Classes returning along with Sunday School. Consider diving in right away to be near the Word of God. It's never too early to start thinking about joining these important classes!

Singers Wanted: Each Sunday we try to incorporate special music into our Service. Music is a gift from God and we Lutherans love music! If you would like to sing or play during a Service, speak to a Fellowship Committee member or Pastor Barkley. If you are uncomfortable with a solo, we can add you to a group!

Elders at Luther Memorial: Your elders are here for you! They care about you and pray for you. Your elders are listening ears for the congregation. If you have a suggestion or question about what is happening at Luther Memorial, please speak to an elder. Every month they meet to discuss the needs of God's people.

Thank you: "I'm blessed to be your pastor. That sentiment doesn't seem enough. I'm HONORED to be your pastor. Thank you so much for all your love and prayers during the birth of our daughter in early July. So many of you reached out to us during this time to see if there was anything you could do to help. These times of great transition truly show how loving Luther Memorial truly is! Thank you!" -Pastor Barkley

Scripture Decorations: Due to supply chain issues, the lettering for our sanctuary and fellowship hall has been delayed. The Sign Shop of Sheboygan has notified us the materials are now in. After cutting, this specially designed vinyl will be applied to the sanctuary and fellowship hall walls and will beautify our space with the Word of God.

Two Practices Returning: After consideration, the elders have decided we will again return to the practice of passing the offering plates during the Service. There will still be a plate available for those uncomfortable with the practice. We are also returning to collecting used individual cups at the railing. The communion assistant will pass by all communicants and retrieve their individual cup before they descend the steps.

Mary Martha Support Meals: We thank the faithful women of Luther Memorial! At times, members need help with meals while at home. These wonderful ladies cook tasty meals to support their fellow Christians. Thank you, ladies!

Easter Choir: We will again gather a group to sing during Easter. There will be a bit of rehearsal time, but nothing too extreme. The choir will sing the Introit, Gradual, and some additional hymns. Stay tuned for more details.

Trustee Work: Our Trustee Paul Kasten continues to install new outlets around the church along with light cleaning duties during the week. He continues to work with our new cleaning service to ensure they do a quality job. If you notice any issues with the building or church grounds please speak with Paul or Dan Doro.

Sunday School: We continue to be blessed by our Sunday School teachers. The classes teach Biblical truths, give hope, and raise little lambs in faith in Jesus Christ.

Miesfeld's Brat Fry: Mark your calendars for our June 25th Brat Fry. We will again need cooks, cleaners, and servers. With restrictions lessening, we are now able to have a bake sale table and condiment table. This will allow the line to move much quicker!

Rummage Sale is Coming: Our rummage sale is returning on August 20th. Mark your calendars! Start saving items around your homes that would be good in our sale. Please no televisions, old electronics, fridges, or freezers. Keep on the lookout for more details!

July Picnic: YES we will again have a picnic Sunday at Luther MEmorial on July 31st. This will be a wonderful opportunity for members and friends to gather and enjoy a time of fellowship. Most likely, there will be water balloons for the kids...and pastor.

VBS: Plans are underway for another joint VBS with Trinity Lutheran, downtown. We will again send out the call for snack helpers, teachers, and assistants. This year we are planning to add two more congregations to the VBS program!

During the service we will have the imposition of ashes available for those who desire them. Ashes remind Christians they are dust and will return to dust in the ground. However, we still have hope in Christ who brings us from death to life!

Lent Services: During the Wednesdays of Lent, we will have 10am Services at Luther Memorial. The theme for Lent this year is "Witnesses on the Road to Golgotha''. Each week we will focus on a different character involved in the events of Holy Week.

Lent Luncheons: We will have a soup and sandwich lunch after each Service at 11am. There will be a sign-up sheet for those who wish to bring food. Please invite friends and family!

Elders Mercy Fund: The Elder Mercy Fund is a special fund set aside to help members of the church in their time of need. Money could be used to help someone with an unexpected medical expense, rent assistance, securing groceries, or whatever else is needed. Money is distributed at the discretion of the pastor and/or elders. This fund is often depleted every six months. Please consider giving to this important mission.

SOUPerbowl Sunday Results: Our congregation was able to collect more than 255 items for St. Mark's Food Pantry! Well done, everyone! It was great to see such an outpouring of charity from Luther Memorial. Next year, pastor has set a new goal of 305 items! We can do it!

March Mission of the Month: The joint seminary fund is our mission of the month for March. Seminaries help train men preparing for the pastoral office. Money raised helps to pay for tuition, books, supplies, and so many other needs of full-time students.

Jonah Sunday Class: Come join a new Sunday Bible Class on Jonah. This in-depth class talks about mission work, the Word of God, and God's plan for the world. Now is a perfect time to study God's Word with your church family at Luther Memorial.

Lutherans in Africa: From their recent newsletter: "James Ongondo, Peter Obiero, and John Mokoronto (all trained at LIA) were ordained by the bishop of Nyamira Diocese of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya, Bishop Sospeter Okongo. Pastor May (head of LIA) preached in the service and happily gifted the pastors with sets of communion ware, Good News magazines, theological books, and stoles for each season of the church year. These stoles were made and given by our friend Laura Vandercook, Pastor Vandercook’s wife from Little Rock, AR. God has given us the greatest supporters! Your gifts do bless many people all over Africa."

Welcoming Visitors: As many begin to return to the House of the Lord, we have seen new faces at Luther Memorial. It is wonderful how our Lord continues to sustain and grow His church. Please make sure to welcome visitors!

Men’s Dartball: Men, it's time! We will again have a dartball game against Grace on March 28th. Bring drinks or snacks if you wish. The group gathers for a short devotion followed by an hour of fun and competition. Join us! ALL men are welcome!

Pastor on Vacation: Pastor and his family will be gone March 21-25th. They will be traveling to see the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum near KY. Pastor will make sure a local pastor is on call for any emergencies.

Trustee Work: We thank our trustees for their work as they continue to update our church building. New outlets are being replaced throughout the building along with other projects. Thank you!

Church Email: Want an announcement published in the Sunday Bulletin or monthly Green Sheet? Would you like an announcement made by email to all members? Need a special event added to our church calendar? Please use the following email address: secretary@luthermemorialsheboygan.comThis email is checked regularly!

Decorating Update: Plans are still underway to add Bible Verses above the interior doorways of our sanctuary. The supplies, like many supplies, are suffering from delays. Money for this project was used from a designated memorial.

Issue 58 The Green Sheet December 2021

Advent Suppers and Services: ALL Wednesday Advent Services will be held at Grace Lutheran in Haven. Grace will provide lovely soup suppers at 5:30pm every wednesday. Each Service will then begin at 6:30. These services help Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ. Come and worship with fellow believers every Wednesday. Please look over the December calendar for details.

Christmas Schedule: There will be a Christmas Candlelight Service at both Luther Memorial and Grace. Both Services will be the same. There will be one Christmas Day Service at Luther Memorial with Holy Communion. Because Christmas falls on a Saturday, Christians across the globe are blessed to attend Church three days in a row! Again, please look over the December Calendar for Service details.

Advent Series "Symbols of Salvation": Ordinarily, when we think of Old Testament prophecies of the birth of Christ, we have in mind specific verses such as, “The virgin shall conceive and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14). But in addition to these wonderful verses, Jesus teaches us that, in fact, the entire Old Testament prophecies about Him. The Advent sermons in this series focus on three particular Old Testament narratives that serve as symbols of Jesus’ coming to share in our humanity: the burning bush, the cloud in the tabernacle, and the call of Gideon. The Christmas sermon then focuses on how the narrative of Jesus’ birth is no fairy tale but a true story that also foretells the purpose of Jesus’ incarnation. Jesus takes on our flesh so that He might die in the flesh for our sins and be raised bodily for our justification (Romans 4:25). All of Scripture finds its culmination and fulfillment in Him. May God the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, bless our meditation this season on Him who is the Word made flesh!

World Religions Study: Beginning December 7th, Pastor begins a new Midweek Series on world religions. We will cover Mormonism, Islam, Judiasm and much more. Each class will include a video by Dr. Paul Meier. This engaging class is open to all members. We meet every Tuesday at 9:30am in the Fellowship Hall. Join us!

Caroling at Terrace: We will again go carolling at Terrace Place this December. We will have Bible Class and Sunday School on December 19th and then head over to sing. No rehearsing necessary and hymn booklets will be provided. The residents will sing along as we carol during their lunch hour. We will also bring cookies made during Cookie Day. Come join us!

Cookie Day: It's time to get our ovens warmed up and throw some flour on the tables! Cookie Day is back! Come and help bake and decorate cookies for our shut ins and residents at Terrace Place. This is a great activity for adults and kids. You are also free to bring your own cookie recipe and use our church kitchen. Come and join the fun!

No Class After Christmas: There will be no confirmation and no midweek class on December 21 or December 28. Due to the business of the season, we will suspend classes and resume in January for our study on world religions.

Hosting Pastors Meeting: A "winkel" is an ancient term for a pastors gathering. It means "small room" or "private space". Pastors from all over Sheboygan gather once a month to discuss modern issues, study Scripture, and work together to care for God's people. Luther Memorial will be hosting the December 20th Winkel. Traditionally, we provide a small breakfast. If anyone is interested in bringing breakfast items, please speak with Pastor Barkley.

Offering Envelopes: Your 2022 offering envelopes are now ready. Please check the Fellowship Hall for your box. If you have an issue with your box number or information, please speak with Sue or Amanda. If you are so inclined, pick up a friend's box and hand deliver it to them before the beginning of the new year.

A Note on Advent: Advent is the first season in the “Time of Christmas.” The calendar of the Church begins with Advent (from Latin adventus, which means “coming into”), a four-week period of preparation before Christmas. The Savior’s birth is second in importance only to His resurrection on Easter Sunday. Traditionally, Advent encompasses a spiritual preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus Christ at Christmas. The Western Church sets the season of Advent as beginning on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas Day, or the Sunday that falls closest to November 30, and lasting through the daytime services of December 24. Christmas begins with the evening services (Vigil) on December 24 and extends through the twelve days of Christmas. The Christmas octave (eight days) includes the Nativity on December 25; Feast of St. Stephen, the first Martyr, on December 26, the day after Christmas; the Feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, on December 27; the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28; and the Festival of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus on January 1.

THANK YOU HELPERS: Thank you to all who cooked and served our Reformation Spaghetti Dinner. A special note of appreciation goes out to Barb who prepared all the meatballs for the meal. Because of generous donations, all the money raised at the dinner was able to go directly to our Flooring Fund.

Electronic Giving: The Lord loves a joyful giver. In 2021 and beyond, the church now has many new ways to joyfully give to the Lord's Church. If you desire to give automatically each week, follow these four EASY steps:

1. Contact Sue or Pastor for our church giving account number.

2. Contact your bank to set up automatic payments.

3. Give the giving account number to your bank.

4. Place an electronic giving card in the Sunday plate when you are able (conveniently provided by the church).

Midweek Class: Our class is called "The Catechized Life." We will always be students and there is so much to learn about our Christian life. We continue to cover topics like marriage, service to our neighbor, spiritual warfare, and so much more. Our ever-growing group meets every Tuesday at 9:30am. Join us!

Sunday Class: Each week we gather after worship to study the Book of Philippians. This verse by verse class is open to new and old Christians. St. Paul has so much to say about faith, hope, and love. Each class is relevant to the Christian life. Take the plunge and join us!

Your Elders: Our congregation has a group of elders ready to serve! They exist to provide care and leadership within the church. They can be contacted in times of spiritual or physical need. Members who are struggling financially or need a ride should also feel free to reach out to an elder. They also desire to see members in church regularly. If church attendance is becoming a struggle, again, reach out to one of our amazing elders!

Lutherans in Africa: A new semester at LIA is on the roll! A visiting pastor, Rev. Tony Masinelli is visiting to teach students on Reformation History. The students are also engaged in a new class on Galatians. In honor of the Lutheran Reformation, LIA organized a movie showing of the Luther movie for all students. The student dormitory buildings continue to take shape.

Fence Update: Hopefully no one take a fence to this post. The project is nearing completion and we thank Craig for being our project leader, it's not an easy post. Rest assured, any holes in the fence will be looked into. The Barkley family would again like to thank all the volunteers who have made this project a success, they “fency” such a loving congregation.

THANK YOU LIA: Rev. Rossow was well received here at Luther Memorial. After preaching, he gave an entertaining presentation about Lutherans in Africa. It was great to see a full Fellowship Hall! Our congregation was able to hand him over $900 when he visited. This money will help African students who study at the LIA Seminary in Nairobi.

LWML SUNDAY:  Our LWML Sunday will be October 3rd. We will take a moment to recognize the important work of the LWML. Our new LWML Mission Statement reads: “As Lutheran Women in Mission, we joyfully proclaim Christ, support missions, and equip women to honor God by serving others.” The Holy Spirit has been doing this for 79 years through the LWML!

Chair Driver: The Decorating Committee has agreed to purchase two wingback chairs for the Fellowship Hall. This will add soft seating for visitors and members alike. We need someone with a truck to pick the chairs up from Brookfield. Speak with the member of the Decorating Committee if you would like to help.

COTP: Are you getting your weekly devotion? If not, contact pastor Barkley. Want a friend added? Great! Just ask the pastor and he can get them on the email list. If you would like the pastor to answer a question on COTP (related to religion, church, God, etc.), please ask!

OCC School Supplies: Please bring in school supplies to help support OCC. Now is a GREAT time to get cheap school supplies as they are discounted at many stores.

Operation Christmas Child

In the back on the tables you will find some labeled containers for items we are looking for to help us with kits and games we are making for Operation Christmas Child.  If you are going through old supplies you don't use anymore and would like somewhere to donate them, consider putting them in the containers to help us.  We would like to fill them so we can add other items.  Keep your eye out as needs will change and we will have other containers out.  Other items we need besides those are colorful socks - they don't have to be new or even a pair, singles are welcome, small pompoms, ping pong balls, wiggly eyes, little decorative items that you may have bought for a craft project and didn't need all of them.  Remember too that school supplies are or will be going on sale soon as school begins and we will need many supplies. We CANNOT use anything that is liquid, like glue, deodorant, or paint cups. Most of all we need your prayers to help us reach our goals and witness to children in other countries.   Thanks a lot! If you have any questions see Lela, Barb or Jann.

Issue 54 The Green Sheet August 2021

Dual Parish Update: Both Luther Memorial and Grace Lutheran voted to form a dual parish. Both congregations also added an amendment to their constitutions to update the section concerning calling a pastor. This ensures both congregations have an equal say in calling any future pastors. All documents have been sent to the district office for review and approval. There is no exact timeline on when this will be completed.

Bushes: Many helpers arrived on July 10th to pull out more bushes, trim, and haul branches away at the parsonage. Craig Larson worked with a stump grinder for four hours to grind out all the bush roots. His expertise with a stump grinder saved Luther Memorial a lot of money. This will free up space in the yard and make fence installation go smoother.

Fencing Schedule: Any large project will have a few hiccups along the way. The post hole machine is late in coming, pushing the fence installation back by about two weeks. This is the type of work that cannot be completed by hand. On the bright side, all the necessary materials have been delivered! A special fence installation "party" will be announced soon!

Parking Lot: The trustees continue to discuss parking lot improvements. Some patchwork is in the works along with other future plans. Thank you for your patience and understanding as our trustees lovingly care for this church building God has given.

New Trustee: Dan Doro has graciously agreed to be a trustee at Luther Memorial. He comes with a wealth of experience and a willing heart for service. Thank you, Dan!

Pastor on Vacation: Pastor will be gone Monday, August 9 and return Wednesday, August 11th to visit friends in Michigan. Pastor Osladil will be available for any pastoral emergencies.

LWML Retreat: The 2021 Fall Retreat will be held at the Best Western in Oshkosh September 17 and 18. Go to the SWD website to register or speak with Gloria Zittel. Pastor Barkley will be presenting along with Deaconess Sandra Rhein.

Mission Festival: Rev. Timothy Rossow will visit Luther Memorial on Sunday, September 19th. Rev. Rossow serves as one of the directors for Lutherans in Africa and is excited to talk about the great work being done by their seminary. There will, of course, be food! Please make every effort to attend this service and hear him speak!

Christopher Gardens Service: Mark your calendars now! Our annual Christopher Gardens Service will be September 19th at 9:30am. If it rains, we will worship on October 3rd at the gardens. As a change, everyone will park on the grass pavilion. There will be two golf cart drivers to deliver those who find it difficult to walk. Drinks and goodies will be available to eat after the Service and then members can walk the grounds.

Luther Rose: Our artist, Sarah, continues her work on the Luther rose painting in the vestibule. The Luther rose will greet all those who enter the church and confess our faith in the cross of Jesus Christ.

What is Doxology?: Pastor Barkley has attended a Doxology retreat. What is Doxology? The primary purpose of Doxology is to provide training, mentoring and consultation services for pastors seeking to enhance their ability to help people struggling with the ever-increasing personal, family and social complexities of contemporary life. The retreat training environment, grounded in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, ensures that pastors will be emotionally and spiritually refreshed and equipped by their participation.

Issue 53 The Green Sheet July 2021

Brat Fry Totals: The Lord granted us great weather, many helpers, and a supportive community. On June 19th, the lines began to form at Miesfeld's Brat Haus by 10am and we did not stop until 2:45pm! So many church members gave of their time and talents to make this one of the most successful fundraisers we've ever had. We raised $2,556.00 which will go towards our flooring loan. This will cover approximately 10 months worth of payments on our flooring loan!

Eisner Ave Totals: We needed $3,200 to cover our Eisner Avenue bill for the 2021 year. We have now received $4,650. This means our bill is paid for the year and the remainder will go towards next year's payment. Thank you to all our generous givers!

Dual Parish Agreement: The congregations of Luther Memorial and Grace Lutheran held separate voters meetings on June 27th to approve a Dual Parish agreement. The wording for the agreement is the same for both congregations. This agreement will then travel to the district office and synod office for approval and formal adoption. Lord willing, both congregations will form into a dual parish within the next two months.

Thank you from the Barkleys: The Barkley family would like to thank everyone who made the new parsonage fence possible. The new backyard fence will help keep all the little Barkleys safe all year long. Thank you!

Bush Removal: Many bushes behind the parsonage were removed on June 26th. Many were planted when the church was built and had become overgrown. In order for the fence to be installed and for the health of the yard, it was decided to cut bushes and then grind out the stumps.

Guest Pastor: Pastor David Blas from the Sheboygan Hispanic Ministry will be the guest preacher on Sunday, July 25th. He will speak about the work of the Hispanic Ministry and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pastor at Continuing Education: Pastor Barkley will be gone July 19-July 27. He will be attending a Doxology Continuing Education course in Buffalo, MN. A pastor will be on call for any emergencies during this time.

Elders and Fellowship Meeting Change: Instead of meeting on the second Saturday of the month, both groups will meet on the third Saturday on July 17th. See the calendar for details.

Trustee Meeting: The trustees of the congregation are planning to meet on Wednesday July 7th. If you have a question or request concerning the buildings or church grounds, please bring it up with a trustee before the July 7th meeting so it can be discussed.

Parking Lot: Please know that the church council and trustees are aware of the current state of our parking lot. There are many options on the table concerning this issue and know your church leadership is working on the best solution possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Church Picnic: Our church picnic will be on Sunday, July 18th after the Divine Service. Brats and burgers will be provided. Members are asked to bring in a side dish or dessert. There is no cost and members are not required to bring anything. This will be a wonderful time of games, fellowship, and food! Bring a friend!

Fence Installation: A new fence will be installed behind the parsonage. The fence will be a shadow box style and 6 feet tall. The fence will wrap around the current fence line (and shed) and extend the current backyard. There will be gates for riding mower access. If you have any questions, please speak with pastor Craig Larson.

Christopher Gardens: Our 4th annual Christopher Gardens Worship Service will be September 19th at 9:30am. We will again partner with Grace in Haven. More details will be forthcoming. Mark your calendars now!

LWML Fall Retreat: The 2021 Fall Retreat will be held at the Best Western in Oshkosh September 17 and 18. Go to the SWD website to register or speak with Gloria Zittel. Pastor Barkley will be presenting along with Deaconess Sandra Rhein.

Getting your COTP?: Want to hear about a children's cartoon, new political movement, old book about Lutheranism, or some liturgical history! Then Pastor Barkley has something for you! Every Thursday Pastor Barkley sends out a new issue of Completely Out of the Pew email. Contact pastor at pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com to get added to the mailing list.

Communion Rail: Luther Memorial is now using the communion rail in the traditional manner. This adjustment has gone smoothly and all portions of the service have been returned to pre-covid measures. The offering plates will still be located in the back of the Sanctuary. We thank our Heavenly Father who has brought us safely back into the Lord's Church.

New Member Class: The joy of a smaller congregation is that your pastor can provide personalized pastoral care. If you have a family member or friend interested in the Christian faith, please have them contact pastor Barkley. He can set up a time to meet and provide instruction that would lead to a full reception into the Christian Church. Members are free to come with their friends and attend these classes. Contact pastor Barkley for more details.

Water Heater: After 16 years, the parsonage 40 water heater broke down. The heater was warranted for six years, so it did well considering its age. A new one was installed in June by Kimme plumbing and the old heater was removed.

Church Artwork: Artist Sarah has completed the first stage of the sanctuary wall paintings. She plans to complete a second coat to guarantee the work will last for years to come. She has also painted both walls of the double door entry in preparation for her next project. A large (at least 4 feet) Luther seal will be painted in the entryway. Lord willing, all the work will be done before the end of summer.

Issue 52 The Green Sheet June 2021

Brat Fry: We will be serving brats at Miesfeld's on June 19th from 9am-2pm. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is a great way to tell our community who we are. All money raised goes to the Flooring Loan. We need many to help with grilling, serving, cleaning, and taking money. Please sign up in the fellowship hall if you are able to help. Make sure to get the word out!

Parsonage Work Day: All willing helpers are welcome to gather at the parsonage on Saturday, June 26th. From 9-12 we need helpers to haul bushes and tree limbs to a trailer. Many of the parsonage bushes are overgrown and many need to be taken out completely. We already have helpers who will cut and trim, but we need many laborers to make the project a success.

Parsonage Fence: There is a plan to install a fence in the back of the parsonage. This fence will provide a bit of privacy and safety for the young Barkley children. A generous donor has given money to pay for most of the materials. Craig Larson plans to lead the fence construction. There will be an informational meeting about the fence on June 6th.

Assembly Meeting: This meeting will take place on June 6th right after the Divine Service. This will give the trustee an opportunity to discuss the parking lot and the possible fence around the parsonage. This is a great way to stay informed and ask any questions.

Pastor on Vacation: Pastor Barkley will be on vacation from Monday, May 31-Friday, June 4. The Barkley family will be visiting friends in southern Illinois. If you have an emergency, please call Pastor Osladill at 920-946-2503.

Morning Meditations: Pastor Barkley will be on the radio June 12-June 18. This is a great evangelism tool that reaches over 11,000 residents. Please make sure to tune in!

Worship Changes: At their May 15th meeting, the Church Council approved removing all restrictions during worship beginning in June. All tape will be removed at pews and at the railings. Members are encouraged to act with wisdom and charity as we are all at different levels of comfort. The FM radio will continue to be used.

Mural Work: Every week our artist, Sarah Gulke, works on the mural within our sanctuary. Within a few weeks sanctuary work will be completed. She will then begin painting a large Luther seal by the double door entryway. Once the painting is completed, we will dedicate the artwork to the glory of God and remember those who made this project financially possible.

Cleaning at Church: Our congregation is blessed with many volunteers. There are, however, large projects that need to be done on a yearly basis. If you could help with any of the following projects, please contact Pastor Barkley. These can be done on your own time and materials will be provided. Vacuuming both sides of pew cushions, Washing windows, Scrubbing vinyl baseboards, Washing stained glass windows inside and out, Scrubbing walls, Dusting high places, Cleaning nursery toys.

July Church Picnic: The Fellowship Committee invites all members to our July picnic on July 18th after the Service. Meat will be provided and members are encouraged to bring a side. Come and enjoy some fellowship together. Weather permitting, we will have the tent up.

ROE V WADE DOCUMENTARY: Crusaders for Life, the pro-life group at Sheboygan Lutheran High School invites you to a free showing of the new Roe V. Wade documentary at the Lutheran High auditorium on Friday, June 4th. Before the movie, they will be hosting a traditional Sheboygan brat fry as a fundraiser for their group. Please use the RSVP and contact Lutheran High School at 920- 452-3323 for more information on this event.

COTP: Are you getting your weekly issue of COTP? Have a friend who could use a little encouragement? Here is your opportunity. Let Pastor know if you would like to be added to the email list or if you would like him to email it to a friend.

Eisner Avenue Update: Thanks be to God, the Eisner Ave. bill is paid up for the year! Thanks to all our generous givers. We have a few more years left on this project. Any money given during this year will be used towards next year's payment.

Thank You Teachers: We all agree children are a great treasure in the, but only so many are willing to teach the young. We give thanks to God for our special Sunday School teachers. They give their time and energy each week to instructing the young in the Fath. Please take a moment to thank them for their service to our congregation.

Automatic Giving: Leaving on a trip? Forget your checkbook? Trying to keep your finances organized? Luther Memorial now has an easy way to give automatically. We have automatic withdrawal applications for those who wish to have their giving taken directly from their checking account weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Speak to Sue if you have any questions. Quarterly Financial Report (from Sue)

Flooring Loan Contributions: Many members have contributed over the year to the flooring loan. During the 2021 year, $2,740 has been given! We currently pay $250.00 a month to LCEF for our flooring loan. Many members have given a $250 gift to help "sponsor" a monthly payment. Thank you to everyone who has contributed.

New Flag: A member graciously paid for a new American flag which stands outside. This flag is a reminder of our freedom and the cost of that freedom. Our trustee also added a new LED bulb that brightly illuminates the flag at night.

Dave Ramsey Material: The entire Financial Peace DVD collection is available for any member to borrow. This series has helped millions of people get out of debt and on a path towards faithful stewardship of God's gifts. Speak to Pastor if you are interested.

VBS Update: There will be no joint VBS with Trinity this year. The leadership at Trinity felt it best to postpone this year's VBS and plan on restarting everything next summer. Bethlehem Lutheran and Trinity in Howards Grove do still plan to have a traditional VBS if parents are interested.

Automatic Withdrawal: Will you be at the cabin over the summer? Do you forget your checkbook on Sunday? Would you like to automatically give to your church? Here is your opportunity! Fill out the attached sheet and attach a voided check. You then mail the form and check to the church or you can hand it to Sue. Sue, our financial secretary, will then contact our bank (Kohler Credit Union) and set up the automatic withdrawal for you. You tell the church how much you would like to give and how frequently you would like this to happen. That's it! Automatic withdrawal also allows the church to maintain stable income throughout the year. Call the church or contact Sue if you have any questions.

A Note from our Artist: "Hello, I'm Sarah Gulke, and I am so excited to be adding more art to your already beautiful church! Growing up in a reformed church, I was taught that everything you do can glorify God. God is the original artist - so when I paint, I am simply copying my Father. Some of my passions include birth support, making music, teaching art, and being with family. Thank you for this opportunity for me to add more beauty to our Lord's church. Hope to meet some of you!" - Sarah Gulke
Communion Change: The railing is returning in May! This has been approved by the elders. After a year of change, some things are returning to "normal". During Holy Communion, members will again come up to the railing to receive the Lord's Supper. We will space out a bit, and ushers will help. Since we cannot sanitize the rail between tables, members are free to stand if they desire.

Mask Update: The state of Wisconsin no longer has a mask mandate. Luther Memorial will implement the following practice in May: "Masks recommended, but not required." This has been approved by the elers. Like any eating establishment, members are free to remove their mask during the worship service. This is a sensitive topic and Luther Memorial moves forward by the grace of God, faithfully living under the cross of Christ.

Fellowship Food Update: Fellowship treats are returning in May. As we have done in the past, members can fill out the treat sign up sheet for a Sunday. We will again gather after worship and enjoy fellowship, coffee, and homemade treats.

Following in Philippians: Join us every Sunday in May as we work verse-by-verse within the Book of Philippians. This is a class meant for everyone and questions are always welcome. If you cannot attend in person, pastor will post weekly videos on our congregation Facebook page.

COTP: Are you receiving your weekly "Completely Out of the Pew" from pastor Barkley? If not, please reach out to pastor so he can add you to the weekly emailing. He can be reached at: pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com. He can also add your friends and family with their permission.

Council Meeting: All council members are meeting on Saturday, May 15th 8:30-10am. If you are not able to attend, please make sure to notify pastor or Craig Larson. We thank our council for all they do for the church!

Elders & Fellowship: The Fellowship Committee will be meeting on Saturday, May 8 from 8-9. All members are welcome to join. We will discuss music, decoration, and future fundraisers. The elders will meet from 9:30-10:30.

Church Assembly Meeting: Our next congregational meeting will be Sunday, May 16th after church. Please make every effort to come. Financial, education, spiritual, and building updates will be given. This is a great way to stay informed in the church.

Last Day of Bible Class & Sunday School: Our last day before Summer break is May 23rd, right before Memorial Day weekend. We thank Jann and Barb for teaching our little lambs over the school year. We will also conclude our Philippians class on the 23rd and restart in the Fall. We will continue to have a time of Fellowship after worship each Sunday.

Brat Fry Time: Mark your calendars. Luther Memorial will hold a Brat Fry at Miesfeld's on Saturday, June 19 from 9-2. We need grillers, sellers, servers, cleaners, and bake sale bakers. A sign up sheet for volunteers will appear soon. This is traditionally one of the biggest fundraisers of the year.

Ascension Day Service: A joint Ascension Service will be hosted at Our Redeemer on Thursday, May 13th at 6:30pm. This will be a festival service with Holy Communion.

Issue 50 The Green Sheet April 2021

New Member: April 11th we will be welcomed a new member. Dan Doro has joined our congregation by way of Confession of Faith. We give thanks to God who continues to grow and sustain His Holy Church. Please make every effort to welcome Dan.

Missions Director: Andrew Brondos has taken on a new role within the church. He will be coordinating all missions within Luther Memorial and keeping an accurate record of any funds raised for Lutherans in Africa, Operation Christmas Child, Sheboygan Hispanic Ministry, and so on. We thank Andrew for his willingness to serve.

Tre Ore: St. Paul continues to host one of the only Tre Ore Good Friday Services left in the county. This ancient three hour (Tre Ore in Latin) Service begins at noon. Every 30 minutes there is an opportunity to exit or enter the church. There are multiple preachers who will give a meditation on the final words of Christ, soloists, choirs, and musical numbers. Pastor Barkley will be preaching during the 2:30-3:00 time.

Easter: We thank our Heavenly Father we can have an Easter Service within the church this year! Our Easter Service will begin at 9:30am. We will have a trumpeter, small choir, and familiar Easter hymns. Various bakery items, coffee, and juice will be available after the Service.

COTP: Are you getting pastor's "Completely Out of the Pew" emails each week? If not, please contact pastor at pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com to be added to the weekly email list.

Painting Update: With the help of a gracious memorial gift, some decorative painting will be added in the months to come. A local artist has agreed to come and paint a large Luther Rose at the double door entryway, add Christian images on the East Sanctuary wall, and add some lettering in the Fellowship Hall. As the project moves forward more details will be forthcoming.

Pastor at Conference: Pastor will be gone April 19-21 at a Pastors conference in Wisconsin Dells. If you have any emergencies, please do text or call pastor Barkley and a local pastor can be arranged.

Midweek Class Cancellations: Our class "The Catechized Life" continues to meet on Tuesdays at 9:30am. The class is always engaging and many find it beneficial. There is always space for new people to join in. All materials are provided. Please note: There will be no midweek class on April 6th or April 20th.

Flooring Loan & Stimulus: We have a need within our congregation. When the flooring loan was agreed upon with the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, we planned to have multiple fundraisers a year. This wasn't able to happen over 2020 and the current year might still have challenges. If you are able and have additional stimulus funds, consider making a $250 contribution towards the flooring loan. This amount would cover one monthly payment to LCEF and be greatly appreciated.

Fellowship and Elder Meeting Change:  Both groups will be meeting on the third Saturday of April on the 17th. Please make this change in your calendars. Thank you!

Easter Flowers: If you ordered flowers, please feel free to bring them home any Sunday after Easter. We thank all those who purchased flowers to beautify the sanctuary during this joyous Easter Season.

Eisner Ave. Correction: There was incorrect information in last month's Green Sheet concerning the amount due for our Eisner Ave project. Luther Memorial still owes approximately $3,000 for the 2021 year. Apologies for any confusion. If you are willing, consider making a gift towards this and make sure to put "Eisner Road" on the memo portion of your check. Thank you!

LIA: From a recent Lutherans in Africa newsletter: "With your support and God’s continued blessing on our efforts, the upcoming Phase 3 will provide a kitchen/cafeteria building and student dormitories. The current kitchen is completely open to the outdoors and the baboons frequently plunder the food supply! The yet-to-be built student dormitories will have solid walls and provide permanent roofs over the heads of the students so they may study and sleep comfortably. As the Lord provides, we will build additional classrooms, a Lutheran primary school, increase staff housing, and build a chapel." Luther Memorial collects an offering for LIA on the first Sunday of each month.

OCC: A red box will make an appearance soon. This box will contain our door offerings for Operation Christmas Child. After last year's wildly successful campaign to provide shoe boxes filled with children’s gifts, we soon realized the cost of shipping. In order to pay for shipping and other fees this year we will collect OCC door offerings. Thank you for all your support of this international mission.

Philippians: Our Joshua Class will soon come to a close. This gives us one more Bible Study opportunity before Summer begins. Pastor will use this time to lead a Sunday Class on the Book of Philippians. This new style of class has never been attempted before. We will gather at 10:45am after church and read Philippians verse by verse. This is YOUR Sunday Bible Class. All are encouraged to attend!

May Assembly Meeting: Mark your calendars now for our upcoming congregational meeting on Sunday, April 16th. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to hear about the work going on in and around the church. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and receive clarification on any current issues. Please make every effort to be in attendance.

Can you Record? We are still in need of a Recording Secretary at Luther Memorial. This person would record Council minutes and Voters assembly minutes. This position does not require extensive training and would be beneficial to the entire congregation. The recording Secretary makes sure we have an accurate record of previous meetings so we remain faithful to our church constitution and most especially, our Lord. Speak with Craig Larson if you are interested.

Issue 49                            The Green Sheet                    March 2021

LWML Prayer Service: Luther Memorial is hosting the Zone 9 LWML Prayer Service on March 13 from 9-10:30am. All ladies are welcome to this event. This is an opportunity for prayer and devotion. Please feel free to invite friends and neighbors.

March Meeting Madness: Because of the Prayer Service, there will be no meetings scheduled for the second Saturday of the month. The Council will meet on March 6 from 8:30-10am. The Elders will meet on that Saturday from 10:15-11:15am. The Fellowship/Music Committee will meet on Sunday, March 7th after Bible Class. All members are free to stay for the Fellowship/Music Meeting.

SOUPerBOWL Sunday: The goal last month was to collect 107 food items for St. Mark's Food Pantry. This would have been a 50 item increase over the previous year. By God's grace, Luther Memorial was able to exceed this goal! We collected 205 food items! Next year, pastor wants the congregation to collect 255 items!

COTP: There are currently 64 people who subscribe to pastor's weekly Completely Out of the Pew devotional. If you want to be added to the list please contact pastor Barkley. His goal is to reach as many people as possible and bring encouragement at this time.

New Plants: The decorating committee approved the purchase of two additional 4' artificial plants for our worship space. They will be similar to the palm trees near the altar. These were purchased using approved funds from Rosie Buteyn's memorial. Decorative painting around the church is still planned, but is taking longer than expected.

Eisner Avenue: The amount needed this year is...Currently we have this mo

Lent Schedule: Please take a moment to review the Lenten schedule on the church calendar. All midweek services will be at Grace Lutheran in Haven. There is plenty of space including a balcony for people to sit comfortably spaced out from one another.

OCC Giving: Luther Memorial is a giving church, especially during the holidays. Partnering with Samaritans Purse, our congregation plans to again support "Operation Christmas Child". After filling shoe boxes with gifts, they are then mailed to boys and girls around the world. Much like our LIA Door Offerings, we will begin to have door offerings for OCC as well to help cover the cost of shipping in December.

Joshua Class: Our Sunday morning Bible Class continues on. All are welcome to join at 10:45am. A pre-recorded Joshua class is available for viewing at 10:45am every Sunday as well.

Blinds: Paul our trustee is installing new blinds in the Fellowship Hall and Education rooms. These new blinds will give our interior an updated look while providing some much needed shade in the summer months. We thank Paul for his continued work in and around the church.

Sunday School: We have the best Sunday School teachers at Luther Memorial! They are dedicated with one goal, the teaching of God's little lambs. Please thank our teachers when you have a moment. We are always welcoming new students to our Sunday class as we teach God's children about Christ the Lord.

Singing Schedule: Any member is welcome to sing on Sunday mornings. If you feel like making a joyful noise, please speak with one of the Fellowship Committee members.

Communion Line Change: A small change is happening beginning in the month of March. The current practice is to wait for the family unit or individual to leave the communion station before coming up to commune. Now each side is free to form a center line as the communion hymns begin. This will allow for a continuous movement of members and reduce the amount of time between communicants coming forward. If you have any questions, please speak with pastor Barkley.

Easter Flowers: As we did with the Christmas plants, you will be able to "sponsor" an Easter plant up until March 14th. A list of various plants will be available in the Fellowship Hall. By having the church purchase plants in advance, we ensure the right amount of plants for our worship space will be ordered in a timely manner. This worked very well for poinsettias over Christmas. You can, of course, take your Easter plants home right after Easter.

Postage Donation: Our church is now mailing more newsletters out than ever before. This trend will most likely continue for the remainder of the year. While we do have a postage budget, donations are always welcome to offset costs. If you are able, consider purchasing a set of forever stamps for the congregation and leave the stamps on the office desk. Thank you for your consideration and support!

Issue 48                            The Green Sheet                    February 2021

LHS Sunday: Mr. Paul Gnan will come and speak about Lutheran High School on Sunday, February 28th. There will be no choir this year joining him on his visit. Mr. Gnan will speak after the Service for a few minutes and be available to answer any questions concerning the new construction at the school.

Guest Pastor: On February 28th, we will welcome Rev. Dustin Krystowiak as our guest preacher. Pastor Barkley is having an outpatient procedure on February 25th and may or may not be in attendance on that Sunday. Rev. Krystowiak lives in Sheboygan and serves as an elder at Trinity Lutheran.

Elders and Fellowship Meeting Change: The normal times will not work for these groups to meet. News will come out in the future about changing the date and time. Stay tuned!

Church Sign: Paul our Trustee has been working with RLO Signs to update our sign on Eisner Ave. The update sign will have less writing and bigger letters. This will allow for more visibility as cars drive by. The bottom of the sign (under the changeable letter portion) will have the Service time in bold numbers. They will also be interchangeable now. Speak with Paul if you have any questions.

Eisner Ave. Road Fund: A new year brings new bills! Consider giving towards the Eisner Ave. Road fund during the 2021 year. We are a few years away from paying off the completion of Eisner Avenue.

SOUPERBOWL Sunday: While the Packers did not make it to the Super Bowl, Luther Memorial has much to be proud of. Our mighty team of members gave it their all! We collected many items of food which will be sent to St. Mark's Food Pantry. Thank you to all who gave!

Ash Wednesday: We will have a joint Ash Wednesday Service on February 17th at 6pm at Grace in Haven. This Service traditionally begins the season of Lent. Due to covid restrictions, there will be no imposition of ashes this year.

Joshua: We continue our Study in the Book of Joshua on Sundays. We have made it all the way up to chapter 13. Make the year 2021 the year you join a Bible Class! You can participate in person OR online!

The Catechized Life: Every Tuesday at 9:30am there is a midweek Bible Class at Luther Memorial. This class covers many questions Christians have. Come and join us all in the new year. You will find it to be a great way to start you week!

Issue 47                            The Green Sheet                    January 2021

Completely Out of the Pew: In an effort to reach more members and guests, pastor is planning to publish 52 email devotions. These very short devotions entitled, "Completely Out of the Pew", will cover everything from current events to movie commentaries. These short devotions are meant to encourage you, connect with you, and be shared with friends. If you have not been receiving previous emails from the church, please email pastor at: pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com and he will get you added.

Deaconess Rhein Visit: We will have a special visitor on Sunday, January 17th. Deaconess Rhein is an LCMS missionary specializing in church music. She is instrumental in translated Lutheran hymnals in to many foreign languages. She will give a talk about her missionary work after the service. Much like with Lutherans in Africa, we will make sure to designate certain times of the year to give towards this mission effort.

Lutherans in Africa: We will continue supporting this mission effort in the 2021 year. The work of the Gospel in Africa continues to move forward. Thank you all who contributed towards this international mission over the year. Every dollar was greatly appreciated.

Bell Choir: Using Thrivent Action dollars, a new set of bells will be purchased for the children of the congregation. The Action dollars will also help pay for bell choir music. The children of the congregation will practice during Sunday school and there are plans to have them play at Services throughout the year.

Elder Mercy Fund: This special fund is designated to help in emergency situations. Often, money from this fund helps members with various needs. Sometimes money is used when a community member visits our congregation needing some financial assistance. Every little bit helps. Consider giving a special designated offering towards this funds to help those in need.

Offering Envelopes: Your 2021 offering envelopes are available in the Fellowship Hall. As a cost saving measure, fewer special envelopes were added to each box. Standard Sunday envelopes and special service envelopes are still included. If you have a friend unable to pick up their box, feel free to deliver it to them.

Joshua Bible Class: From June until December our Sunday class was able to cover the first ten book of Joshua! It was enriching to take time in such a complicated yet fascinating book. We are now taking a small break into the new year and will return on January 10th. Feel free to join us in the new year! All materials and coffee will be provided.

Worship Life: As we enter 2021, the worship life of Luther Memorial will much the same as it did in 2020. Masks will still be warn along with social distancing. Our radio transmitter will still be available. In the end, we just ask people to use their God given wisdom whenever they are in church. Thank you for your understanding as we do all can to continue worshiping in the House of the Lord.

Trustee Activities: Paul Kasten along with help from Craig Larson continue their work in and outside the church. There are plans to update the service times on the church sign. Soon a new water heater will need to be installed in the church. Paul and Craig are also laying out plans for adding a fence around the parsonage in early spring along with parsonage bush trimming and removal.

Fellowship Committee: This committee faithfully meets every second Saturday of the month from 8-9. All members can join. This is a great opportunity to discuss creative fundraisers, children's activities, church music, and church decorating.

Thank You Organists: Please make sure to thank both Anne Middleton and Rev. Boettcher for their organ work over 2020. Both of them practice during the week to ensure a beautiful Sunday Service. We have gone a solid year with an organist at the bend at every Service. Thanks be to God!

Directory: An updated church directory will soon be available to all members. Please pick yours up inside the church fellowship hall. These directories are intended to help connect members with one another.

Thank you Amanda and Josh: Please thank Amanda Rowe and Josh Chang for their Office Assistant work. Often working a month at a time, Amanda and Josh help prepare Sunday bulletins along with your monthly newsletters and other duties as assigned. Thank you!

Issue 46                           The Green Sheet                   December 2020

Advent Devotions: Lutheran Hour Ministries has again produced an Advent Devotional Series. This year's series is entitled "God With Us". You will learn again what God the Father has done— He has kept His promise. In so doing, He has announced that grace and forgiveness are available to all, a gift made possible by the birth of Jesus: God’s Son, our Savior. He is Immanuel, “God with us." Devotions are available in the Fellowship Hall.

Poinsettias: This year the Fellowship Committee is trying something new. Luther Memorial will be purchasing 24 Poinsettia plants to beautify our sanctuary during the Advent and Christmas season. You can sponsor a poinsettia by filling out a form in the Fellowship Hall; listing who you would like your poinsettia to be in honor or in memory of. Plants can be picked up any time after Christmas Day.

Advent and Christmas Worship: This is a new year with many changes. We will have joint midweek worship services on Wednesdays. On Christmas Eve, there will be a 4pm Service at Grace and a 7pm Service at Luther Memorial. We will again have a joint Christmas Day Service at Luther Memorial. Our church calendar has all the details! Take time this season to worship Christ the newborn King.

Dual Parish Update: A small group from Luther Memorial and Grace have been working diligently to produce a dual parish agreement between our two congregations. This is a labor intensive process that can take months. Any agreement must be approved at both congregational assembly meetings. At our December Assembly meeting, a more detailed update will be given.

Assembly Meeting: Our annual Assembly Meeting is scheduled for December 13 after the Divine Service. At this meeting the congregation will review and approve the spending guide for the 2021 year. If you are unable to attend and would like your voice heard, please let pastor or Craig Larson know.

Tree Decorating: In the interest of social distancing, we will not be decorating the church as has been done in the past. This year a few members will assemble our Christmas trees in advance. After our December 6th Service, members are encouraged to stay for a few minutes to decorate the trees as they are able.

Online Worship at Grace: Grace Lutheran Church records their entire worship service each week through Facebook Live. If you are interested in watching, go to their Facebook Page and "like" their page for updates.

E-Giving: Online giving is a great option for those who don't like checks, spend weeks away on trips, or just want one less thing to worry about. Luther Memorial has a dedicated giving account with Kohler Credit Union. Setting up an automatic withdrawal for your weekly giving can be completed in minutes. Speak with Sue Fischer with any questions.

Communion Visits: If you are in need of Holy Communion, please do not hesitate to contact Pastor Barkley. He is here for you and would love to visit with you! Some members prefer to receive Communion in their home while others come to the church sanctuary. Contact the pastor with any questions.

Midweek Class: Our Midweek Bible Class, The Catechized Life, meets every Tuesday at 9:30am. This class is for old and young Christians. We cover many topics and this is an open space to ask questions and grow together. Join us!

Joshua Bible Class: We are now deep in the heart of the promised land! Our Sunday Bible class covers this exciting Book of Scripture. Pastor has also made the entire class available online. Join us each week as we dive into this Old Testament Book.

Chili Cook-Off: It is with heavy hearts and empty bowls that the Fellowship Committee announces the postponement of our annual Chili Cook-Off. With Covid restrictions, it just wasn't feasible to gather a large group for our annual event. Lord willing, we can establish this tradition later and take first place! Stay tuned for new and fun Fellowship Events!

Lifetime Plan for Giving: As a caring Christian, you want to use your God-given resources to provide for people you love and ministries you care about. The LCMS Foundation can help. No matter your age or financial situation, the LCMS Foundation can help! Contact Craig Toerpe for details at 262-707-3005 or Craig.Toerpe@lfnd.org

Issue 45                           The Green Sheet                   November 2020

Fellowship, Elders, & Council: The month of November always brings one large day of meetings. Please notify Pastor Barkley or Craig Larson if you are an elder or council member unable to attend. Here is the meeting schedule for Saturday, November 14th:

  • Fellowship & Music Committee: 8am-9am

  • Council Meeting (to discuss 2021 spending guide): 9am-10:30am

  • Elders Meeting: 10:30am-11:30am

Midweek Class is Back: After a very long hiatus, our Midweek Class The Catechized Life is coming back! We will begin meeting again on Tuesdays from 9:30am-10:30am beginning in November. This class covers all aspects of our Christian life including heaven, worship, Scripture, and more. We always welcome new faces. All materials and coffee will be provided.

All Saints' Day: This year's All Saints' Day Service will be Sunday, November 1st. This special Service recognizes those members who have entered eternal rest over the year. We believe all Christians are Saints who have been made holy by God's Word and Spirit. Come and be fed with God's comforting Gospel.

Joint Thanksgiving Eve Service: Join your brothers and sisters from Grace Lutheran as we worship at Luther Memorial on Wednesday, November 25th at 6pm. During this joint Service, we will give thanks to the Lord of the harvest who gives us earthly and heavenly food. This Service was very well received last year and we are glad to keep the traditional going.

Brat Fry Update: Our September 26th Drive-Thru Brat Fry brought in approximately 50 cars! After expenses we raised $1,475.00. This money goes towards our Church Flooring Fund. This money will be used towards many future months of payments. We ran out of brats three separate times during the day. Wow! Thank you again to everyone who made this event a fun fundraiser!

Communion Visits:  If you have not been able to receive the Lord's Supper regularly on Sunday, please contact pastor Barkley at 847-840-1351. He also receives text messages. Pastor can meet with you in the church sanctuary or at your home. Come and draw near to your Lord and His gifts of Word and Sacrament.

LIA Sunday: November 1st we will again take a door offering for Lutheran in Africa. Here is a brief update about the happenings at LIA. During this pandemic, $10,000 was given to LIA (by various congregations) so they could do social work within area communities hit by the pandemic. Babies and adults continue to be baptized in and around the LIA community. A dam and spillway was recently completed guaranteeing neighboring herdsman water during the African dry season. As you can see, the money Luther Memorial raises for LIA helps the bodily and spiritual needs of our brothers and sisters in Africa.

Joshua Class Online: Never been to a Bible Class? Wondering about the relevance of the Old Testament? Love studying at your own pace? We have the perfect class for you! Every week, pastor Barkley publishes a new Bible Class on the Book of Joshua online. These classes are about 30 minutes long and correspond with handouts. Please speak with pastor Barkley if you have any questions or need handouts. This is YOUR Bible Class.

Church Parking Lot Worship: Our FM Transmitter is still available for those who wish to worship inside their cars. Luther Memorial provides this unique option to all people. Our church office assistant dutifully sends the Sunday Bulletin by Saturday via email to all who need it. If you need a bulletin emailed to you, please email: secretary@luthermemorialsheboygan.com. Tune in to 95.5Fm every Sunday from 9:30-10:30am when you arrive to the church parking lot. Tell your friends and family.

Operation Christmas Child: OCC sends shoeboxes of Christmas gifts to children in over 100 countries. Evangelism materials are also sent with these boxes. Make sure to check out our OCC table in the Fellowship Hall for more information. The deadline for donations is November 14th. This is a new and exciting evangelism opportunity for our congregation.

Eisner Avenue: By God's grace, we have already raised enough to cover our Eisner Avenue bill for the 2020 year. If you traditionally contribute towards the Eisner Avenue Fund, consider donating to the Floor Fund for the remainder of the 2020 year. Thank you for your continued financial support.

Advent is Coming: The church year continues to move forward. Midweek Advent Services will be at Luther Memorial on Wednesdays beginning in December. Also note, there will be an early Christmas Eve Service at Grace in Haven and a later Christmas Eve Service at Luther Memorial.

Amazon Smile:  When buying on Amazon, make sure to use the Amazon Smile program which sends a percentage of sales directly to Luther Memorial. When on your computer make sure to go to smile.amazon.com and then choose Luther Memorial Lutheran Church as your supporting organization. It is good to keep Amazon Smile in mind as you make your Christmas purchases!

Church Website: We are absolutely blessed to have a current and user friendly church website. Each month the church calendar is updated, links to pastors sermons, and other information is uploaded. This is also a great evangelism tool as you speak with friends about our congregation. To find our website, go to https://www.luthermemorialsheboygan.org/

Joint Leadership Meeting at Grace: The elders and council members of both Luther Memorial and Grace will meet at Grace Lutheran on October 3rd from 9-11am. This will again be a meeting to discuss a future ministry partnership between our two congregations. Those attending are reminded to bring paperwork from prior meetings.

THANK YOU: Thank you to all who helped with our Drive-Thru Brat Fry. It takes many workers to pull off such an event. These fundraisers also let the community know about our very active congregation. Thank you!

LWML Zone 9 Rally at Trinity: All ladies are invited to Trinity Lutheran on Saturday, October 10th for a rally. Registration begins at 9am. These events help strengthen faith, fellowship, and Christian growth. Please see the attached poster for additional information.

No Elders of Fellowship Meetings in October: Because of the LWML Zone Rally at Trinity, there will be no elders or fellowship meeting in October.

Pastor at Conference: Pastor Barkley will be in Manitowoc from October 12 to October 14 at a SWD Pastor's Conference. He will be traveling to and from the conference daily. If you have an emergency, please feel free to call Pastor Barkley.

Morning Meditations: Pastor Barkley will be on WHBL's Morning Meditations the week of October 18th. This radio program is listened to by thousands in the county and is a great evangelism tool. The program also helps listeners learn about our Service times. Listen in!

Recording Secretary Needed: We are in need of a new Recording Secretary. This board position records the minutes at all council and congregational meetings. Please speak with Craig Larson if you are interested in the position.

Lutherans in Africa: One of the goals of LIA is to be a completely self sustaining campus. Here is their September farm report: "We got 703 eggs with the laying stock of 33 birds. 630 eggs were sold...200 wheelbarrows of fertile river soil was harvested from the seasonal river after all remaining water had been used for irrigation and neighbors’ cattle. This soil will further enhance the quality of our garden. The dam is now waiting to be filled up during next rainy season, as is our 900,000 L rainwater reservoir...Among other vegetables, more than 330 lbs of beans were harvested, thrashed, and stored for staff and students’ meals." Our next LIA Giving Sunday will be October 4th.

Sheboygan Hispanic Ministry: Please keep the Sheboygan Hispanic Ministry in your prayers. During their annual "Operation Backpack" they collected 124 backpacks with school supplies which served 45 families. They are already collecting items for next year. Call Rev. Blas at 630-229-2455 for more information.

Joshua Bible Class: Our new Sunday Bible Class is up and running! Join us as we sink our teeth into this great Old Testament Book. Every participant will receive a binder and will receive everything they need. This is YOUR Bible Class! Please note, pastor Barkley is posting recordings of his class on our church FB page as well.

Sunday School: Our students and teachers are having a wonderful time in Sunday School. It's not too late to get your neighbors, grandkids, or friends in Sunday School. We have wonderful and caring teachers who bring the Gospel to life for our little ones.

Portals of Prayer: We have plenty of Portals of Prayer booklets available at the church. These daily prayer books are purchased by the church for each and every one of you. If you want, take extra and bring them to a friend. Check out our Information Table for other material as well.

Hymnals are Back: After many months, they have returned! Our traditional bulletins are now back and our hymnals are in their rightful place. For those worshiping inside their vehicles, please feel free to borrow a hymnal and keep it in your car. We want all members joining together in prayer, praise, and song!

Issue 42                              The Green Sheet                            August 2020

Drive-Thru Brat Fry: Brats are coming! Join us on Saturday, September 26th from 10am-2pm for a Drive-Thru Brat Fry! The Fellowship Committee hopes this will be a great time for our congregation to come together for a great cause. It will only be a success if we get the word out! Tell your friends and neighbors and even your in-laws! Rain or shine, this event will happen. Proceeds from this event will go towards our Church Flooring Fund. Posters are now available for your fridge, workspace, or any public publicity board.

Brat Helpers: We need fryers, servers, cleaners, and order takers! This is a great time to again come together as a congregation and work towards a common goal. If you can help on September 26th, please let a member of the Fellowship Committee know. We will need at least two grills for the event and any donations towards food supplies are welcome.

Circuit Visitor Meeting: All Council members and Elders are asked to attend a meeting on September 12th beginning at 9:15am. The purpose of this meeting is to continue discussions concerning a joint ministry partnership with Grace in Haven. Rev. Osladil will lead this meeting. This will be a detailed discussion that will cover salary guidelines, shared pastoral duties, service schedules, and more. If an Elder or Council member cannot attend, please inform Pastor Barkley.

No Elders Mtg. in September: Because of the Circuit Visitor Meeting on September 12th, there will be no Elders meeting. If there is a pressing need for a meeting, a Sunday meeting will be scheduled after the Divine Service. Thank you for your understanding.

Fellowship Committee: There will be a Fellowship Meeting on September 12th from 8-9am. This is open to all members of the congregation. This committee covers a multitude of items including church decorating, music, fundraisers, and fellowship events.

Sunday School: Sunday School begins September 13th! Jann Blanchard will again teach the little children and Barb Jacobs will teach the older ones. We thank them both for their faithful work! Now is the time to consider sending your neighbor kids, grandkids, and all other kids to our first rate Sunday School. Please speak with pastor Barkley or one of the teachers for details.

Bible Class: On September 13th, we begin a new class on the Book of Joshua! Pastor Barkley intends for this study to last the entire school year. We will meet every Sunday beginning at 10:45am. We will cover the crashing walls of Jericho, the Ark of the Covenant, and countless battles between Israelites and various enemies. A three ring binder with maps and handouts will be made available to all attendees. This class will also be recorded.

Vacancy Begins: As many are already aware, Pastor Barkley begins to serve Grace in Haven as their Vacancy Pastor beginning September 6th. This will be a first for him and both congregations. After his 8am Service at Grace, Pastor Barkley will travel to Luther Memorial in time for the 9:30am Service. Please be patient as we transition to this new schedule.

Lutherans in Africa: Please remember that our LIA Giving Sunday is September 6th. Here is an (abridged) note from the LIA Director: “Pastor May recently visited a Maasai tribe near the Lutheran School. He read Acts 2:39, saying that he was there to offer baptism to anyone “whom the Lord our God calls to himself” . The patriarch of the household, elderly father, raised his hand indicating his desire to be included into Christ’s family. He was baptized first, which was a matter of great importance. Traditionally in Maasai culture many elders consider Christianity for women and children and the men hold to their traditional gods. What an exultant joy it was to welcome him in the throng of saints through the rite of the holy baptism! Thirty others moved forward to line up by the baptismal font. Parents with beaming faces carried their little ones to be wrapped in the loving arms of the Heavenly Father. Clapping and happy laughs followed each baptism as the salvation was extended to these beloved members of the family.”

Emailing List: Pastor Barkley does his best to publish and send out a weekly Bible Study to all members. If you have not been receiving his emails or want to be added to this list, please contact him. Also, if you have a friend interested in Christianity, please pass their information along to pastor Barkley. Pastor’s email is: pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com

Automatic Electronic Giving: Many of your monthly expenses (cable, mortgage, etc.) are automatically deducted from your checking accounts. You now have that same capability here at Luther Memorial. Contact our Treasurer or Financial Secretary and they will be able to give you the appropriate account information. You will then contact your bank and set up an automatic withdrawal. The amount and regularity of your giving is determined by you. This is a great option for those who take frequent vacations, forget their checkbook, or just want one less thing to think about on a Sunday Morning!

Worship Life: The FM Transmitter will remain on during Services until further notice. Our practice of continuously receiving the Lord’s Supper remains. Every other pew will still be taped off. Our worship life will remain the same as it did during the summer months. All this is done out of love, safety, compliance, and comfort. We here at Luther Memorial will do all that we are able so we can continue to hold regular Worship Services. We pray for this pandemic to end and remain faithful to what matters most, the Lord Jesus Christ and His gifts of Word of Sacrament.

Ministry Partnership with Grace: Pastor Serr will preach his final sermon at Grace in Haven on August 30th. We wish him a blessed retirement! Pastor Barkley has been asked to fill the vacancy at Grace beginning September 6th. Pastor Barkley has agreed and the church counsel has been made aware of this decision. The vacancy is expected to last six months.

Service Time Change in September: A slight change in our Sunday Service time is coming. Beginning September 6th, Luther Memorial will begin Sunday Services at 9:30am. This will allow Pastor Barkley time to travel from Grace to Luther Memorial every Sunday. The Service at Grace begins at 8am. Please try to get the word out about this change!

Recording Secretary: We are still in need of a Recording Secretary. Speak with Chairman Craig Larson if interested. The Recording Secretary keeps an accurate record of Council and Voters Assembly meetings. Ideally, this position serves a two year term.

Automatic Withdrawal: Most of our car, mortgage, and utility bills are paid using automatic withdrawals from our banks. Luther Memorial now offers automatic withdrawals for offerings! Members can rest assured their offerings are deposited in a secure fashion at a time interval of their choosing (weekly, monthly, etc.). This is also a great paperless option. Speak with the church financial secretary, Sue Fischer, for details.

August Rummage Sale Cancelled: The Fellowship Committee decided to cancel our August Rummage Sale. This was not an easy decision. Many factors played a role in this decision including the fact that most area churches have also canceled rummage sales for 2020. We were also informed Neat Repeats would be unable to receive any items that did not sell in August. We look forward to next year! Thank you for your understanding.

10 Minute LutherLink: Every week pastor posts a Bible Study YouTube video. Each LutherLink video is only 10 minutes and covers a few verses of Scripture. Make sure to take time every week to click, participate, and share! This is YOUR video Bible Study! Go to Youtube.com and search for “Luther Memorial, Sheboygan WI”.

Podbean: Every week pastor uploads his Sunday sermon to the podbean.com website. This is also available on the Podbean smartphone app which is free to download. This is a great way to listen while on vacation, share the Word of God with a friend, or listen again later in the week. Go to: podbean.com and search for “Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Sheboygan, WI”.

Date Change for Fellowship/Decorating/Music & Elders Meeting: The Elders and Fellowship Committee will meet on the THIRD Sunday in August (the 15th). The Fellowship/Music/Decorating meeting will begin at 8am followed by the Elders meeting at 9:30am. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

Decorating Committee: Thanks to a generous Memorial, some beautiful additions will be coming to Luther Memorial. The Church belongs to the Lord and we His people are charged with its care. Any artistic additions to the building should give glory to God. The first major addition will be a large painted Luther Rose on the entry wall by the front double doors. This colorful addition will immediately remind people of our name, LUTHER Memorial! Scripture verses will also be added over each side of the doors to the sanctuary entrance. The artwork will be completed by Tanya Wiltzius, a member of Trinity Sheboygan and local artist.

Bible Class & Sunday School: In a normal year, Sunday School and Sunday Bible classes would begin around September. This is most certainly not a normal year! Pastor will be reviewing Bible study options and speaking with area pastors over August to determine what to do next. Please be patient as the situation continues to change.

Service at Christopher Gardens:  Please mark your calendars in pencil for an upcoming outdoor Service at Christopher Gardens on Sunday, August 30th. The exact Service time has not been determined. This will also be Pastor Serr’s farewell Service. Again, please mark your calendars in pencil as this plan could change in August.

When to Call Pastor Barkley?  Some people wonder when they should call or contact their pastor. Here are some suggestions.

Call your pastor when…

…you or a loved one is going into the hospital.

…you would like a prayer said for you or an acquaintance.

…you are not able to come to church for a prolonged period of time.

…you have a concern or question about something at church.

…your conscience is troubling you.

…you have a spiritual issue with something the Bible says.

…you know someone that wants to know more about Jesus Christ.

This is not an exhaustive list! Pastor Barkley can be reached at 847-840-1351 or pastor.luthermemorial@gmail.com. He also receives text messages!

We Reopen on May 31st:  Thanks be to God, our church doors will reopen on May 31st! There will be some noticeable changes. The doors will be propped opened as you enter and exit. You will pick up a printed Service Bulletin upon entering. The bulletins will also be available online for those who wish to conserve paper. We ask you not to linger in the Fellowship Hall before or after the Service. There will be no food or coffee at this time. Members may stay and chat in the parking lot as long as they wish. Offering plates will remain stationed in the back of the Sanctuary. Every other pew will be marked off. Masks are encouraged. These measures will remain in place during the entire month of June. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Worship Options: If you don’t feel safe entering the Sanctuary, you can still come to the 9am Service and stay in your car. Our FM radio transmitter will still be in operation during the month of June. No one will be forced to enter the church. We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe as they hear God’s Word. Bulletins will be made available to those in their cars.

Laborers For Luther: We will be cleaning the church on Saturday May 30th from 9-12. We need helpers to prepare our building as we reopen for worship. We can practice social distancing while working together. If you are able, bring your own buckets and rags and then clean them at home. If you have one, bring a shop vac for pews and dusting. An empty building still gets dirty! Hymnals need to be relocated, pews need cleaning, nursery toys need to be wiped down, and all windows washed. The list continues to grow. Come and help!

Holy Communion: The Lord’s Supper will be distributed differently in June. Members will receive the body and blood of Christ in a continuous fashion at the base of the steps. Individual cups will be spaced out on trays along with the consecrated bread. Please note, reception of God’s gift is not a law, but pure gospel. The Lord’s Supper exists to grant the forgiveness of sins and it also strengthens faith. The Lord extends this Holy Meal to His children as a free gift of His grace.

Miesfeld’s Brat Fry on June 6: Are we having a brat fry in June??? The answer is…maybe! Miesfeld’s is working to ensure a safe working environment and we are waiting to hear their final decision. This was a very profitable fundraiser last year. Money raised goes towards our floor fund. Dave Bongel is heading up this event. If you would like to cook, serve, count money, or serve in another capacity, please contact Dave at: 920-321-6172.

Paint Update: The last time the Fellowship Hall was painted, Pastor Smith was still serving at Luther Memorial in the 90’s. Josh and Kira were vigilant, adding multiple coats to ensure a proper seal all and made sure all other imperfections were fixed. The color is neutral and timeless. The door and window frames were painted to match our new window frames. This gives the room a clean and cohesive look. Thank you, Josh and Kira!

New Members: In the midst of a pandemic, Luther Memorial continued to grow. We welcome Rev. Dennis Boettcher and his lovely wife Lela as new members. Rev. Boettcher has been a regular organist at Luther Memorial for over a year. Please make them feel welcome!

Pastor on Vacation: Pastor Barkley will be gone June 3-8 and June 15-20. Pastor Osladil of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is available for any emergencies. Pastor Osladil can be reached at 920-946-2503.

Mission Sunday: Pastor David Blas with be our guest preacher on June 21st. He will give a brief presentation about the Sheboygan Hispanic Ministry after the Service. We thank God for the ministry work Pastor Blas is doing here in Sheboygan.

Luther Link: Pastor Barkley intends to continue his “Luther Link” Bible classes online. Subscribe to the church YouTube page for free. Join in, watch, participate, and share! These videos are for you and your friends.

  • Joint Service with Bethlehem: Bethlehem Lutheran has invited Luther Memorial to join them for a Drive-In Service at the Lutheran High School parking lot on Sunday, April 26 at 9:30am. Pastor Barkley will be preaching. All attendees must remain in their vehicles with windows up. There will be no handouts. A service folder will be available on the church’s website (https://www.ourbethlehem.com/). Attendees can print bulletins at home or bring it up on any electronic device. As you turn into the Lutheran High School, you will see signs with which FM station to use.

  • May Worship At Luther Memorial: After a false start, it is now safe to announce we will begin “Drive-In” Services during all the Sundays in May at Luther Memorial. Our Services in May will begin at 9am. We have our own FM transmitter now. Please park in the back lot facing the church building. Park, tune, and participate. Bulletins will be emailed in advance. For those who don’t use email, copies will be made available. A box for offerings will also be in the lot. Rejoice! We will finally join again to sing, hear the Gospel, and encourage one another at Luther Memorial!

  • Holy Communion: Pastor Barkley is happy to set up a time to distribute the Lord’s Supper with all members. Please do not hesitate to call him to set up an appointment (847-840-1351). He usually meets members in the Sanctuary, but can make home visits as well.

  • Devotion Delivery: If you would like a recording of sermons but don’t have access to a computer, please contact pastor (847-840-1351). He can deliver a CD or flash drive (which works in newer televisions) with recorded sermons at your convenience.

  • Upcoming Services: All activities (apart from Drive-In Services) are suspended until further notice or until Wisconsin’s “Stay at Home” order has passed. Because of our uncertain schedule, there is no calendar for May.

  • Good News: Good things are still happening at Luther Memorial! On average, over 80 people watch our online Services. In other news, Paul Kasten installed new and brighter LED lights in the fellowship hall. Mike Weber also installed a metal drop box by the front double doors. Two new members will formally be added to our congregation when we return to regular worship. Finally, on Easter morning, a stranger stopped by the church to send a letter of thanks and bring an Easter Offering!

  • Offerings: Christian stewardship is part of our life. We give to the Lord, knowing it is all the Lord’s to begin with. In thanksgiving for His forgiveness and grace, we return back to Him our offerings of praise, time, and treasure. If you are financially able, consider tithing (10%) from your stimulus check to the Lord’s Church.  A pre-addressed envelope has been enclosed for any regular or special offerings you wish to send. Thank you for your generosity, love, and support!

A Note from Pastor Barkley’s Desk:

We are all staying home. I wonder what will be left open in a month? What happens after this virus passes? Calamities bring uncertainty. Uncertainty brings doubt. And doubt leads to unhealthy thoughts. The world has stopped moving, and we wonder what comes next. How remarkable is it that Jesus goes inside a locked room after His Easter resurrection (John 20)? Right after the greatest miracle in history unfolded, Christ visited His disciples. The disciples were following their own “Stay at Home” order! And yet, the Risen Lord goes from the empty tomb into a room filled with His believers. Dear Christians, we have a Savior who comes to us. Jesus Christ left the grave to be with us! Jesus is the answer to our doubt and uncertainty. What comes after all of this? It is the promises of Christ. He has promised forgiveness by His blood, peace by His cross, and life everlasting by His empty tomb. Those promises are waiting. They will not change! All our hopes and expectations are found in Jesus Christ. He will be with us all when this is over. Take comfort because Jesus is with you!

Issue 37                               The Green Sheet                            April 2020

“Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” -Ephesians 2:20-22

Holy Communion: Pastor Barkley is glad set up a time to distribute the Lord’s Supper with all members. Pastor has the church sanctuary set up to receive members who wish to hear the Word of God and receive the Sacrament of the Altar. Please do not hesitate to call him to set up an appointment (847-840-1351).

Upcoming Services: All activities and Services are suspended until further notice or until Wisconsin’s “Stay at Home” order has passed. As Christians we respect our leaders (4th Commandment) and protect our neighbors as best we can (5th Commandment). There are no Services planned for the first three Sundays in April. Because of our uncertain schedule, there is no calendar for April.

Easter: This year we will have a creative “Drive-In” Easter Service on April 12th at 9am. Worshipers will gather in the back parking lot, tune their radios, and worship their risen Lord from the comfort of their vehicles. The Service and music will be delivered live. Holy Communion will be distributed to each family individually in a safe and reverent manner. Note: Those who made Easter flower payments will have their checks and cash returned.

Offerings: Offerings have gone down significantly since we suspended Services. Please remember that our church expenses have remained the same. If the Lord has already blessed you financially, consider tithing (10%) a portion of your stimulus check to the Lord’s Church. Thank you!

Food Bank: St. Mark’s Food Pantry is seeing high demand during this time. As Christians, we are called to love God and neighbor (Mark 12:31). Now is the time to help! They request the following items:

Toilet paper, rice, canned meat/tuna, canned hearty soup, hand sanitizer, dry beans, canned vegetables, baby food/diapers.

A Note from Pastor Barkley’s Desk:

In the Bible we read “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” in John 14:27, and again “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” in Joshua 1:9, and again “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of darkness, I will fear no evil” from Psalm 23:4. The Lord knows plagues, sickness, and despair will at times come upon His chosen people. But we do not fear! The victory has already been won! We do not stand waiting for salvation. Salvation has already come in Jesus Christ. Satan has been thrown down, sins are forgiven, and the promises granted in baptism have not changed. The gates of hell will not prevail against the Church (Matt. 16:18). Nothing will ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. We rejoice in our Baptism, give with joy, find comfort in the Gospel, and remember the victory has been won in Christ. Fear not!
